Age 16: The Moped Phase
At 16, you can ride a 50cc moped (max 28mph) with a provisional licence, CBT, and L-plates. You cannot carry passengers or use motorways. Taking a full AM test at this age allows you to remove L-plates and carry a pillion, but you remain restricted to 50cc.
Age 17–18: The 125cc Phase (A1)
From age 17, you can ride a 125cc bike (max 11kW/15bhp) with a CBT and L-plates. By passing your A1 theory and practical tests on a 125cc machine, you gain a full licence for that category. This lets you ditch the L-plates, carry passengers, and use motorways, though you cannot yet ride larger bikes.
Age 19–23: The Mid-Range Phase (A2)
At 19, you can take tests on a 395cc+ bike to earn an A2 licence, allowing motorcycles up to 35kW (47bhp). The bike’s power-to-weight ratio must not exceed 0.2kW/kg, and if restricted, the original power cannot have exceeded 70kW (94bhp). This grants full road privileges on most mid-sized motorcycles.
Age 24+: The Unrestricted Phase (A)
At age 24, you can take Direct Access tests on a 595cc+ bike (min 50kW/67bhp) to ride any motorcycle without power or CC limits. If you have held an A2 licence for two years, you can take this “big bike” test as early as age 21 via Progressive Access to unlock all restrictions.
